Poppy Seed Dressing is one of my favorite salad dressings. This salad dressing recipe is perfect for summer because it’s a light, flavorful, slightly sweet vinaigrette.
I made this poppy seed salad recipe to go along with my fresh Strawberry Poppyseed Salad and it’s SO good. It mixes so well with the strawberries, sweet almonds, and feta cheese. YUM! This dressing is so versatile though, so I’m going to be eating it with tons of other salads too. A little bit of spinach, some almonds or walnuts, and this poppy seed salad dressing would be a delicious side salad!

Homemade Poppy Seed Salad Dressing
This poppy seed vinaigrette is so easy to make at home. No need for store-bought salad dressings when you have this one!
I love making my own dressings and sauces because they always taste so much fresher, and fresher is always better. This homemade poppy seed dressing recipe is the perfect blend of flavors. It’s a little bit sweet from the orange juice & sugar, balanced out by the vinegar base and poppy seeds. It’s one of my favorite dressings right now!
Poppy Seed Dressing Ingredients:
- White Vinegar
- Poppy Seeds
- Canola Oil (or vegetable oil)
- Granulated Sugar
- Orange Juice
- Dried Onion Flakes
- Dried Mustard
- Salt & Pepper
How to Make Poppy Seed Dressing
Poppy seed salad dressing is easy to make! Just follow a few simple steps to make this homemade dressing recipe.
- Use a blender/food processor to mix the sugar, vinegar, orange juice, onion flakes, dried mustard, salt and pepper
- Mix for about 1 minute
- Add the oil while mixing, and continue processing another couple of minutes
- Mix for another 30 seconds while adding the poppyseeds
All done! Store your dressing in the refrigerator until you’re ready to use it on your fresh salad.
How long does homemade poppy seed dressing keep in the refrigerator?
Store this homemade poppy seed dressing in an airtight container in the refrigerator. It will keep for up to 2 weeks, so you can make plenty and use it on all of your salads.
Is there dairy in poppy seed dressing?
This poppy seed dressing recipe does not contain dairy. It’s more of a vinegar-based dressing rather than a creamy dressing, so no dairy is needed.
Do poppy seeds go bad?
Poppy Seeds can go bad, but they still last a long time compared to a lot of ingredients. Store them in an airtight container in a cool place (ideally in the fridge) and they should last about 6 months.

Ingredients
- 1¼ cups granulated sugar; ultrafine sugar can be used
- ¾ cup white vinegar
- 2 tablespoons orange juice
- 2 tablespoons dried onion flakes
- 2 teaspoons dried mustard
- ½ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
- ¼ teaspoon kosher salt
- 1½ cups canola oil; vegetable oil can be used
- 2 teaspoons poppyseeds

Instructions
Combine sugar, vinegar, orange juice, onion flakes, dried mustard, black pepper and salt in a blender or food processor.
Mix or process 1 minute.
With the blender/food processor still mixing, slowly add the oil and continue mixing until oil is incorporated & emulsified, about 1-2 minutes.
Add the poppyseeds and mix another 30 seconds.
Keep refrigerated in an airtight container up to 2 weeks.
